Summary
A twelve-year-old boy named Mortimer found a damaged book in his father’s library. He read the book by candlelight. One of the stories in that book was called “The Midnight Express.” On page 50, there was an illustration of an empty railway platform at night, lit by a dim, yellow lamp, with a man standing under it. Mortimer never read beyond page 50. Many years later, Mortimer was waiting for a train at a dark, deserted railway junction.

There are certain aspects of our self-identity which, even though we try very hard to evade, keep pursuing us all along because they are inherent.
