Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Wales to Norwegian parents. He served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. In the 1940s, he became one of the best-selling authors for his contributions to the literary world. He was a British novelist, short story writer, poet, fighter pilot, and screenwriter. Dahl rose to prominence in the 1940s with works for both children and adults and became one of the world’s best-selling authors. His works include James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The Witches, and George’s Marvellous Medicine. The present text is an excerpt from his autobiography, Boy: Tales of Childhood.

Roald Dahl’s father was Norwegian. His grandfather was a merchant. The narrator’s father was a successful shipbroker who supplied coal to ships’ engines. He had a shipbroking firm in Cardiff, South Wales. His father got married in 1911. When Roald Dahl was two years old, the family moved to a large country mansion near the village of Radyr. The estate had a big farm, woodlands, cottages, meadows, sties, a chicken-run, horses, hay wagons, and several gardeners, servants, a ploughman, and a cowman. In 1920, his eldest sister, Astri, died at the age of seven. His father, deeply affected, became careless about his own life when struck by pneumonia, a disease that had no cure at the time. Eventually, his father died at the age of fifty-seven. Roald’s mother had to care for five children after the deaths of her husband and daughter. She sold the big house and moved to a smaller suburban villa in Llandaff. For the first time, Roald went to a kindergarten school at the age of six. Elmtree House, a school for children, was run by Mrs. Corfield and Miss Tucker. Despite spending a whole year at Elmtree House, Roald remembered very little of his activities there, but he could never forget the excitement of riding his new tricycle to school with his eldest sister. There were no motor cars on the highway 62 years ago, and they enjoyed the ride, racing to school without any grown-ups accompanying them.
