Jean Giono (1895-1970) was born into a family of modest means. His father was a cobbler, and his mother was a laundress. He was a French author who wrote primarily in the genre of fiction, often setting his works in the Provence region of France. About forty years ago, the writer found himself completely alone after walking for three days through the barren and monotonous lands grown only with lavenders in Provence. He had to camp next to an abandoned village. The ruined houses of the village made him think that the village might have a spring or a well. However, he found no signs of life. The season was dry. It was indeed spring. The sound of the wind was like that of a wild beast. He had to move his camp. But after five hours of walking, he still found no water and no hope. Everywhere, the narrator saw dry, stiff, and woody plants. He met a shepherd with thirty lambs resting near him on the scorching ground. The shepherd gave him a drink, soup, and shelter. From him, the narrator came to know about the inhabitants of the village. He saw the man examining one hundred acorns, which brought the narrator a sense of peace. The narrator wanted to know more about the man. The man soaked the acorns in a bucket of water. The next day, he pounded his iron rod into the ground, making a hole. He placed an acorn in the hole and covered it. In this way, he planted one hundred thousand acorns, of which only twenty thousand sprouted. He took pleasure in the solitude of the place and resolved to remove the barrenness of the land by planting trees. They parted ways the next day. The following year, war broke out. The narrator was engaged in the war for five years. After the war, the narrator met the man again, who had remained unaffected by the war. The sight of the oak trees left the narrator speechless and deeply impressed.
He was astonished to see that all the trees had grown from the efforts of just one man. He felt that one person alone could perform a task as significant as God’s.

There suddenly he meets a shepherd and interestingly finds out that the person meticulously sorts out acorns which he plants all along the arid stretch to see them grow into huge oak trees. After several years, when the author returns to the same place, he sees a series of oak trees on the once barren land and realized that this is the hardwork of the shepherd. The First World War had already begun and the author had to join the war that brought about rampant bloodshed and agony to mankind. But seeing the barren land turned greenish he realised that human beings, when driven by good intentions, can still create godlike wonders.
