Summary
Long, long ago, England was ruled by a king named Uther Pendragon. But soon after the birth of his child, both the king and the queen, Lady Igraine, died. At that time, many of his opponents tried to seize the throne. To protect the child from any danger, Merlin and Sir Ulfius, two wise counselors of the late king, gave the child to Sir Ector, a loyal subject of the king, and ordered him to raise the child as his own son.
In the house of Sir Ector, Arthur, the son of the late king, grew up as a gentle, strong, and handsome youth, just like his own father. It was Christmas in England, and the people were hungry, cold, and frightened. One day in a churchyard, people found a large stone on which was fixed a magnificent sword with the inscription, “Whoever pulls out this sword is by right of birth, the king of England.” The eager barons tried, but none of them succeeded. Only Arthur lifted the sword in front of many people who hailed him as the king of England. After becoming the king, Arthur, with the help of Merlin, secured peace for the people of England. When Arthur lost his sword in a battle, Merlin took him to a valley where Arthur found a new sword named Excalibur. Arthur married the beautiful Lady Guinevere, the daughter of the king of Cornwall. On the wedding day, Merlin took him into a room with a huge round oak table, which was kept for his devoted knights. They promised to help the helpless, be gentle to the weak, and to punish the wicked. After ruling England for many years, Arthur grew old and returned Excalibur to the golden hand in the lake. Then the king ordered his people to place him on a barge, which sailed him towards the setting sun.

Ever since his father, King Uther Pendragon, died, the kingdom fell into absolute lawlessness. The knights and barons fought against one another out of greed for power. Arthur grew up to be a wise and prudent ruler. With exceptional valor and sagacity, he revived happiness and order in his kingdom. He not only ruled the people but loved them also, and in return, he was equally loved and respected. Good deeds never go unrewarded.
