Writer’s Profile
The prolific author Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish writer, poet, and playwright. The Importance of Being Earnest is one of his most popular plays. He also penned many short stories like The Selfish Giant, The Happy Prince, The Model Millionaire, and so on. The present text is a dramatisation of his famous story The Happy Prince.

Summary
The Happy Prince lived in the wonderful palace of Sans-Souci. He played in his palace garden all day with his friends, and at night, sang and laughed. After his death, a statue was built for him. The Happy Prince was covered with gold from head to foot. His eyes were two precious sapphires, and there was a big red ruby on his sword hilt. One wintry day, a Swallow came and sat between the feet of the Happy Prince. He wanted to fly away to warm Egypt. Suddenly, tears from the Prince’s eyes dropped upon him. The Swallow was startled and wanted to know why the Prince was crying. The Prince requested the Swallow to stay with him for at least one day and night. The Prince asked the Swallow to take the ruby from his sword hilt and give it to a poor woman living in a small street. Her son was suffering from a fever. The little Swallow could not refuse his request.
The Prince also asked the Swallow to give one sapphire to a young playwright writing a play for a theatre, and another sapphire to a poor little girl in the town square. The Swallow did all these tasks as per the Prince’s request. Afterward, the Swallow died at the feet of the Prince. The next day, the Mayor of the town came by with three councillors. They decided to take down the now ugly statue of the Happy Prince. Meanwhile, an angel appeared and declared that the Happy Prince would live in the city of gold and that the Swallow would sing in paradise forever.

সানস-সুসির এক চমৎকার প্রাসাদে সুখী রাজকুমার বাস করত। তার প্রাসাদের বাগানে সারাদিন ধরে সে তার বন্ধুদের সঙ্গে খেলা করত, আর রাত্রিবেলা সে গান গাইত ও হাসত। তার মৃত্যুর পর তার একটি মূর্তি বানানো হল। আপাদমস্তক সুখী রাজকুমার সোনা দিয়ে নির্মিত ছিল। তার চোখ দুটি নীলকান্তমণি দিয়ে তৈরি, আর তার তরবারির বাঁটে ছিল একটি বড়ো লাল চুনি। এক শীতের দিনে একটি সোয়ালো সুখী রাজকুমারের পায়ের মাঝখানে এসে বসল। সে উষ্ণ মিশরে উড়ে যেতে চেয়েছিল। হঠাৎ রাজকুমারের চোখের জল সোয়ালোর ওপর পড়ল। সোয়ালো চমকে গেল এবং জানতে চাইল রাজকুমার কেন কাঁদছিল। রাজকুমার সোয়ালোকে অন্তত একদিন ও একরাত তার সঙ্গে থাকতে অনুরোধ করল। রাজকুমার সোয়ালোকে তার তরবারির বাঁট থেকে চুনিটি নিয়ে ছোট্ট সরণিতে থাকা একটি গরিব মহিলাকে দিতে বলল, যার ছেলে জ্বরে ভুগছিল। ছোট্ট সোয়ালো তার অনুরোধ প্রত্যাখ্যান করতে পারল না।
রাজকুমার সোয়ালোকে একটি নীলা থিয়েটারের জন্য নাটক রচনা করা এক তরুণ নাট্যকারকে দিতে এবং আর-একটি নীলা টাউন স্কোয়ারের গরিব মেয়েটিকে দিতে বলল। সোয়ালো রাজকুমারের কথা অনুসারে এই কাজগুলি করল। এরপর সোয়ালো রাজকুমারের পায়ের কাছে মারা গেল। পরের দিন শহরের মহানাগরিক তাঁর পারিষদদের নিয়ে সেখানে আসেন। তাঁরা সুখী রাজপুত্রের কুৎসিত মূর্তিটি সরিয়ে ফেলার সিদ্ধান্ত নেন। ইতিমধ্যে এক দেবদূত সেখানে উপস্থিত হয়ে ঘোষণা করলেন যে, সুখী রাজকুমার স্বর্গের সোনার শহরে বাস করবে এবং সোয়ালো তার নন্দন কাননে চিরকাল গান গাইবে।
Teaching Of This Lesson
The Happy Prince had been happy all his life living amidst the luxuries of the palace. However, his statue was placed at the town square after his death. From there, he, for the first time, witnessed the unbearable suffering of people, which filled his heart with sorrow. With the help of a swallow, he gave away every piece of jewel and gold that adorned his statue to help the deprived people of the town. In helping others, the Happy Prince turned dull, and the swallow died. So, the Happy Prince could no longer be allotted a place in the town. But, in the end, an angel came down to tell us that such noble souls might not have found a place on earth, but the doors of heaven’s garden would remain open for them, and they would live there in eternal happiness. God crowns those who adore His creation.
