Writer’s Profile
Intizar Hussain, born in Dibai, Bulandshahr, British India in 1923, migrated to Pakistan in 1947. He writes short stories and novels in Urdu and also columns for newspapers in English. He has received many awards in Pakistan, India, and the Middle East. The Seventh Door and Leaves are among his books translated into English. His Urdu short story ‘Badal’ has been translated as ‘Clouds’ by Rakshanda Jalil. The present text is its edited version.

Summary
A boy was frantically searching for the clouds. He wandered far down the winding paths and alleys. He went on asking every passerby to aid his search. He asked a grass-cutter if he had seen the clouds. The boy’s question seemed strange to the grass-cutter.
He then met a farmer who was plowing his field. The farmer too couldn’t make sense of his question. The farmer thought that clouds might be the name of a lost child. However, no one could give him a satisfactory answer. Even his Ammaji misunderstood his question about clouds. The question always haunted the boy. He had seen the clouds gathering in the dark sky the previous night. When he went to sleep, the sky was clear and full of stars. He was surprised and saddened that the clouds had moved across the skies without shedding a drop of rain. He walked between the fields in the fierce heat of the sun. At last, he reached a large tree under which there was a Persian wheel. It was like an oasis in the middle of a desert. He splashed the cool water from the Persian wheel on his dusty feet. There he asked an old man if the clouds had gone there. The old man looked closely at the boy. Perhaps, he understood his question. In reply, he told the boy about his past experience that he had lived in a place where it hadn’t rained for ten years. Thereafter, the boy walked for miles and headed homeward. As he neared his village, he saw the roads were wet. All the trees looked freshly bathed. He felt a wave of happiness. He hurried back home and saw his jamun tree freshly showered. His joy knew no bounds as the clouds had come to his village in his absence.

Nature, with all her dimensions, mystifies us. The little boy with his childish innocence went around looking for the clouds, but the clouds never reveal their whereabouts. They appear and disappear in moments without letting us perceive the phenomenon. Nature is beyond human control. She plays at her will.
