William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was a British playwright, novelist, and short story writer. During and after the wars, he traveled to India and Southeast Asia. Of Human Bondage is regarded as Maugham’s most important novel. His other notable works include The Razor’s Edge, The Moon and Sixpence, etc. The present text is an excerpt from his short story of the same name.

Summary
Once Princess September, the daughter of the king of Siam, was weeping alone in her room. Suddenly, a little bird hopped in and sang to her delight. He wished to live with her.
But the other princesses were jealous of her and advised her to cage the little bird. With this proposal, September decided to take no more risk and put the bird into a cage. He was very surprised when she put him in and shut the door of the cage. While singing within the cage, the bird stopped in the middle mysteriously. The bird slept at night there but asked her to open the cage in the morning. September refused to open it. One day she decided to take him for a walk but the trees and the lake looked different from within the cage. The next day when September wished him good morning, he gave no reply. She found him lying there with eyes closed. When he was asked to sing, the bird replied that he was unable to sing in a cage. Then September understood her fault and made him free. The bird promised her to come back and sing for her.

Teaching Of The Story
When we love someone, we always desire their company. The moments spent with them become the most precious, bringing immense happiness. However, in our narrow-minded love, we should not ignore the aspirations and desires of the one we love. Princess September realized that her love had made her selfish, blinding her to the little bird’s repeated pleas for freedom. She then understood that just as her happiness lay in having the bird close, the bird’s happiness lay in flying freely in nature. In fact, freedom is a natural right, and we can only give our best when we feel free.
